The American Kennel Club recently published their top dog breed list for 2010. One breed dominates the top spot.

According to the Humane Society of United States, Americans own around 77.5 million dogs. Whether used as hunters, security, or companionship, dogs are a fixture in American households. The American Kennel Club (AKC) is a premier resource for those researching breeds and for sponsoring the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Best in Show.

The American Kennel Club

The American Kennel Club, or AKC as it is more commonly called, is essentially an organization for breeders to register purebred dogs. Besides registration of dogs the AKC organization promotes dogs as companions, canine health, owner's rights, and responsible dog ownership (AKC, 2011).

AKC is most recognizable for the organization's annual Best in Show competition. Yearly breeders enter their dogs to compete for the ultimate purebred award. Winners receive ribbons and the title of Best in Show for the year.

Labrador Retriever Most Popular Dog Breed

In an unbelievable twentieth year in a row, the Labrador Retriever breed has secured the title of the most popular dog in the United States (AKC, 2011). Labs, as the breed is often called, are popular because of their versatility. The breed is a keen hunter and obviously a superior retriever, so sportsmen find Labs an essential part of their sport. Additionally, the breed is warm-natured and eager to please, which makes it a great family dog, rescue dog, and guide dog.

Interestingly enough the Lab breed originated from Newfoundland where the fisherman trained the breed to retrieve fishing lines and lost fish (Labrador Retriever Guide, 2011). Soon the dogs were exported to England for hunting purposes. Through decades of breeding Labs are now available in yellow, chocolate, and black.

German Shepherd Second Most Popular Breed

Originating in Germany the German Shepherd breed was bred from farm and herd dogs. The AKC describes the breeds temperament as "direct and fearless, but not hostile...when the occasion demands, eager and alert; both fit and willing to serve." The German Shepard also possesses similar characteristics of the Lab, which makes the breed second in popularity.

Many police departments utilize German Shepherds, often referred to as K-9's. The breed is essential to searching for narcotics or bombs, tracking criminals, and rescuing people. They have also been used in the military for similar situations.

Other Popular Dog Breeds

The AKC ranks 167 dog breeds on it's Most Popular Dog Breeds 2010. The ranking is determined by the number of dogs registered with the AKC. The following are the dog breeds that round out the 2010 top ten list:

  • Yorkshire Terrier
  • Beagle
  • Golden Retriever
  • Bulldog
  • Boxer
  • Dachshund
  • Poodle
  • Shih Tzu

Dogs are often considered a member of the family. Some even are used for service and rescue purposes. The AKC is a great resource for families and organizations to research breeds. The AKC's top ten most popular breed list can be a useful tool for those considering a new dog.
